Description

Panterine Shivan are the large and dominant Shivan castes. They are a proud and bold people, feared for their martial prowess and impressive leadership skills. Panterine is the collective name for the larger, stronger Shivan castes, including the lion, tiger, jaguar and leopard Shivan. Hyena Shivan, also known as gnolls, share many physical similarities with panterine, but are social outcasts and urchins.


Physical Description

Panterine are larger than Felinae, standing between six and seven feet tall. Broad shouldered and powerfully built, panterine are impressive creatures. Ranging from tan to orange to brown to black, panterine fur is usually broken up with black stripes or spots with the notable exception of lion Shivan. Male panterine are usually larger than the females, but both genders weigh upwards of 300 pounds. Panterine hands and feet hide small retractable claws, and their mouths hide large pointed teeth.

Society

Panterine society is very hierarchical, and panterine lead the pack. Physically dominant, panterine often use their size to keep the lesser Shivan in line. This is rare, though, as most Shivan know their place in the hierarchy rather instinctively and few do anything to attempt to upset this. The exception to this are the gnolls, who are considered the lowest of the low.

Relations

Panterine get along well with other races... when those races understand that the panterine is in charge. Panterine throw their weight around and find no problems with intimidation or force to get their way. They have no desire to harm other individuals necessarily, just to frighten them enough to get their way. While some panterine are quite eloquent, most are gruff and direct. When dealing with individuals outside of Shivan society, most panterine decide which caste an individual most resembles and treats them as if they were from that Shivan caste. It is very difficult to change a panterine's first opinion of someone.

Gnolls treat nearly everyone they meet with either disgust or fear, sometimes both. They do not get along well with others, or even their own kind. They strongly view themselves as outcasts, and seem to work hard to keep it that way.

Alignment

Panterine, first and foremost, turn to the caste system for guidance. They are neither cruel nor forgiving, giving only what the caste order suggests they give. Because of this, most panterine are lawful neutral. Gnolls, on the other hand, tend to have a stronger pull towards evil alignments, relishing cruelty whenever they can take part in it.

Adventurers

Panterine adventurers are rare, but those that do leave to adventure mostly do so out of bravado or in an attempt to prove that their self-importance is justified. When groups are harmonious, panterine make great leaders or do well to follow great leadership, but in groups of disharmony, panterine often make things difficult. Gnoll adventurers all almost unknown, but those that do often seek to better their station in life, seeking a place for themselves where they can be accepted and esteemed as individuals.


Panterine Racial Traits

+2 Strength, +2 Constitution: Panterine are strong and resilient.

Medium: Panterine are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.

Normal Speed: Panterine have a base speed of 30 feet.

Low-Light Vision: In dim light, panterine can see twice as far as humans.

Natural Hunter: Panterine receive a +2 racial bonus on Perception, Stealth, and Survival checks.

Tough Hide: Panterine have thick fur and tough skin, granting them a +1 natural armor.

Alternate Racial Traits

Rot Gut: Gnolls have stomachs of cast iron and have become used to the filthiest of conditions. Gnolls gain a +2 bonus on saves vs diseases, ingested poisons, and spells or effects that cause the gnoll to be nauseated or sickened. This racial trait replaces the tough hide racial trait.

Natural Weapons: Some panterine have retractable claws on their hands. This ability gives them two claw attacks that deal 1d4 points of damage on a successful hit. These attacks are primary attacks, or secondary attacks if the panterine wields manufactured weapons. This racial trait replaces the tough hide racial trait.
