The Kerakin

Sat Jun 24, 2006 10:25 am

Dustin, let me know if this is too similar to your idea. I was thinking about this on the way home last night.

The once-proud Kerakin were once a idyllic race at the center of the Gamma quadrant. 500 years ago, they were a mighty race of strategists and expansionists, and eventually conquered and integrated the other races around them: the Tegor, the Pak, the Slavor, and the mysterious Krynn.

However, a bloody civil war over 200 years ago left the once-civilized Kerakin leaderless. The government-controlled mining and manufacturing operations ceased. This led to a run on the existing stock of cruiser parts. The Kerakin now roam the galaxy looking to conquer lone vessels and scrap heaps to maintain and grow their fleet. Still considered among the best engineers in the galaxy, they are still not often trusted because of the cunning and tricks they commonly use to gather their raw materials. Kerakin ships are usually a combination of the lost tech from the Kerakin's golden days, and the best parts from other races that they have managed to acquire.

The Kerakin, along with the integrated races of the Tegor, Pak, and Slavor, are humanoid in appearance. The Krynn are also very human-looking, but are often slight and small, with a slight bluish tint to their skin. Most modern Kerakin are a mixture of these bloodlines.

I don't see anything wrong with that at all. After we get our ideas more firmed up we can work on interaction between the major cultures - things like I could see the Uhlani having been hard pressed by the Kerakin before their civil war broke 'em up.

It'd be cool if we also had a group-editable timeline that we could all add events and history to.

I mostly wanted to create the anti-Borg. Kind of the 'Redneck Borg' of the galaxy. So, I added a little of a fallen Roman Empire to their history, and there you go.

They seem excellent stock for a shady race; anybody who has to hijack, pirate and steal to keep their ships running is going to be in conflict with their neighbors. (conflict is a good thing for the game world).

The Dambaro

Wed Apr 04, 2007 7:26 pm

In the Agnathan System, on the world of Progress (the Kerakin name), live a large, proud warrior race known as the Dambaro. These large, bipedal, elephant-like beings have a history of persecution, which led them to their eventual development of large-scale weapons and warships. The Dambaro males can group to nearly 9.5 feet tall, their skin growing up to 3" thick, and their tusks grow up to 5' long. They speak a sublingual language of rumbles that are imperceptible to humans, but some have learned to speak human languages albeit in low, slow, deliberate manner. The name 'Dambaro' comes from these individuals who have attempted to pronounce their race's name where a human ear can understand it.

While the Dambaro are well armed and unafraid of nearly anything, they are extremely loyal -- sometimes to a fault. They are unfamiliar with any type of treachery, and are not known to have ever used such tactics. Depending on which side they're on, they can be your greatest ally or enemy.

The Xanthalus ("Space Squids")

Wed Apr 04, 2007 8:44 pm

On Kinder, the ocean moon and largest satellite of the gas giant Osiris, the aquatic life lives in fear of the Xanthalus, a predator in that resembles a giant form of one of Earth's cuddlefish. The xanthalus can apparently live for thousands of years, and never stops growing (although growth does slow down with age). Once reaching a certain size, the xanthalus can fill its massive bladder with ocean water, and blast itself through the thin, low atmosphere into space, where its unique anatomy and malleable body allow it to survive in the harsh environment. In space, the xanthalus can survive in a form of suspended animation nearly indefinitely, only using energy from a nearby sun to maintain basic brain function and cellular respiration.

The xanthalus is a master of disguise, using its complex skin to replicate its surroundings. It shows its intelligence by posing as a meteoroid seemingly indefinitely as it floats through space. It sometimes changes trajectory or provides thrust by shooting jets of water that it has stored in its massive internal pouch. When about to strike, the xanthalus can either ambush its target, or can go into a bioluminescent light show designed to mesmerize its prey. It has reportedly evolved the ability to release all of its stored energy in the form of an EMP blast in order to disable small space ships, and use its strong tentacles to get to the edible beings inside.

While obviously intelligent, exactly how intelligent the xanthalus is is uncertain and hotly debated. Some believe that it has the ability to speak or communicate thoughts in some ways to other xanthalus, but any type of vocal projection would be useless in the vacuum of space.

The Tikmijn
(had to put a placeholder up until I got a chance to type everything out)

The Tikmijn (TEEK men) are a race of intelligent, cunning, and diminutive furry creatures. Most are only 2 feet tall. They have the face and muzzle like that of a fox, but with larger ears. Their bodies are ferret-like, but nearly as wide as an otter's. They walk on their hind legs, but frequently drop to all fours to run or rest. They have nimble, small hands that they use to hold and examine whatever their curiosity deems necessary. Their keen ears allow them to hear better than humans, and they can reproduce most sounds.

The Tikmijn were discovered when the Krynn landed on the world known to them as 'Saxon'. They mostly ignored what they thought was the local animal population, and continued to build and use Saxon's resources. They eventually found that much of their equipment and ships stopped working. Upon further investigation, it seemed that much of their was sabotaged systematically. Over their 20-year garrison, they discovered that the diminutive Tikmijn, who they thought were unintelligent animals, were actually a sentient race. During their stay, they found communities and settlements of the Tikmijn.

The Krynn exploited the Tikmijn's small size and nimble hands to do repair jobs on their ships. The Tikmijn quickly learned the language of of the Krynn due to their keen hearing and ability to reproduce sounds. Over the years, The Tikmijn adapted quickly to the new technology and became comfortable living in ships and bases with other races. They became adept mechanics, letting their natural curiosity drive their technical talents. They like to mimic voices and noises, and some are proficient enough to speak carrier tones and communicate with digital equipment.

The Tikmijn have a sophisticated, multi-tonal language, allowing them to work together well. They can communicate complex ideas and plans in a fraction of the time it takes other races to.

Because of their thick fur, most Tikmijn no not wear clothing, but many wear a harness to put tools and equipment in as they crawl through tight ship crawlspaces.

Neat race. Remember the language suggestion we talked about.
