Race Creation Tables

Fri May 04, 2007 11:41 pm

Ok, this is my best synthesis of the rules I've found for creating races in both the 3.5 DMG and Savage Species. Keep in mind, this is just a guideline, and anything that seems overly abusive can experience an additional penalty.

The thermal exhaust port of your Death Star™ plays a critical role in the dissipation of excess waste heat produced by the Death Star's energy reactors. Under no circumstances is the thermal exhaust port to be covered, obstructed or modified in any way.

OK. Let me see if I understand how to use this.

I want to make a space gorilla. Large Climber.

So ... if I want +2 Str, I have to either take a -2 Dex or Con, or -4 split between Int/Wis/Cha, right?

Let's say we take +2 Str, and -2 Int, -2 Wis. Since this balances, no adjustment.

I'm not sure I understand your 'difference' notation. How many points is greater than or less than? How many till it's +2 levels? Is there some kinda cap?

Size Large, +1 level adjustment.

I want a Climb speed, so +1 level adjustment.

Not sure I understand how to implement the natural weapons (not that I want to). Am I correct is assuming that 'multiple attacks before level 6' is the equivalent of claw/claw/bite? The second one seems obvious, that's if you want a D10 Bite or something.

I'm not sure I understand the last part either. So, if I get two bonuses on skills for free? I get one feat for free?

We might want to talk this over and write up some step-by step rules, like I plan to make for Starships. Add a few more pluses and minuses and examples or something

Well, the reason why its so ambiguous is because the book is also. We can get more detailed with the instructions, and some of it will have to be figured out on a case-by-case basis.

Sounds good. Looks like we'll need to get this written up along with the starship rules.

Something that I've caught on to is that the 'balancing' of a (class|race) is somewhat arbitrary. There are general guidelines that you can go by, but in the end you have to end up playtesting them. There's not a statistical formula you can plug all of their stats into that would tell if it's balanced. 'Balance' is in the minds of the GM and players. Also, the style of a GM or the setting of a campaign can also have a lot to do with how 'balanced' a character is. A character who's part aquatic would've been great in the Seafarer's Game, but would totally suck in the middle of Rothgorod. So, we can come up with a spreadsheet and do the best we can, and we may end up with a race that looks good on paper, but until we playtest them we won't know how well they balance.

Not a rant or criticism of anything in particular, just my thoughts on the matter.

I tend to agree. I just want to make the races we create fairly close to the races in the PHB.

You may be making a big leap of faith in thinking he will be there.
It suddenly occurred to me just how absurd this scene was: a guy wearing a suit of armor, standing next to an undead king, both hunched over the controls of a classic arcade game.

I will be there, and I will bring the book, but I have to admit that Dead Rising is pretty stiff competition. :)

Wouldn't that be dead raising? Because, you know, to dead rise, you'd have to be dead yourself.

Appreciate the pun though. :)

I always thought Dead Racing was fun. It was a nice summer afternoon when my parents would take my brother and I to the dead races -- The Corpse Circuit, the Muerte Motorsports. Those stiffs sure knew how to drive. That is, until a head goes rolling across the speedway, causing a massive pileup.
